Nike – ‘Nothing Beats a Londoner’

My absolute pleasure to play a part in this project alongside the immensely talented team at Time Based Arts behind this spot for Nike. The ad from Wieden & Kennedy, directed by Megaforce, shows how hard Londoners have it (and therefore are) as they 1 up each other in their training regimes.

If you watch to the very end you’ll see the one shot I did.

TK Maxx – ‘A White Christmas’

Friend director Ian Pons Jewell along with Wieden & Kennedy bring us TK Maxx’s 2017 Christmas ad. TK Maxx offer shoppers the chance to win a white Christmas by finding one of a limited number of snow globes that will be hidden in TK Maxx stores across the country. Seeing as the last white Christmas to occur naturally in England was back in 2010 this is probably your best bet. This ad shows a family who have won the prize getting more than they bargained for when the TK Maxx snow team show up and blast the whole family including the cat & dog with snow cannons.

Argos – ‘Bounding’ – 2017 Adapt

This ad was originally posted at Electric Theatre Collective in 2016. I worked on the 2017 adapt version at Big Buoy when some of the products had changed and needed to be either removed from or replaced in the ad. The VFX work included removing the guitar that the doll was holding in the first 2 shots, changing the colour of a couple of lamps and replacing the cushion cover on the cushion that the man somersaults in with and delivers to a woman at her door. Below are some split screens taken from the original ad on the left and the revised ad on the right.

Vodafone – ‘Red’

It was an absolute pleasure to work with the very talented team at Time Based Arts for the first time on this Vodafone commercial directed by Aleksander Bach in which a mysterious red light illuminates various night time scenes across Germany until the entire country lights up red (which is the bit I did). Time Based Arts has this to say: “I just received my new phone from Vodafone. It was really weird though as it wasn’t delivered by courier as is normal but a huge red streaking light flew at me and handed me my phone. Although I was originally scared witless by the light and now see it as excellence customer service and this lovely advert makes much more sense to me now!”

Dermalex – ‘Stronger Skin’

A commercial for skin care brand Dermalex from Hometown London. Some pieces of text were captured in camera having been painted directly onto the models skin. Other words were added in post in their final position and tracked backwards through the camera move so that when played forwards they appear to start broken up and then resolve as a readable word. A series of wipes and seamless joins were added throughout the second half of the film to connect the shots together, creating the appearance of one continuous camera move from scene to scene. The final transition from the girl against the wall through to the pack shot involved building a CG scene of the hexagon set in Flame to bridge the gap between the 2 camera moves. Other VFX work included general set cleanup, beauty work & pack replacements.

Bruno Banani – ‘Man’s Best’

Bruno Banani returns for a second tour of his laboratoire in this latest instalment brought to us by Friend director duo Tim & Joe for Grey London. In this film the essential oil extraction process has been ramped up to a new level. As a leggy trolley lady leads us on our journey through the lab, we take in an Anti-gravity peppercorn selection chamber, an infinitely tall microwave storage shelving facility and an automated laser powered bottle-sculpting robot – amongst other things. Rushes design team headed up by Domhnall Malone worked closely with Tim & Joe in designing the robot with reference to the villain restraint rings from Superman 2. I supervised the VFX shoot out in Vilnius, Lithuania and led the team for the post process back at Rushes.

Laser Robot – Dust, smoke, dry ice, laser and glass elements were shot on set against a black background. The robot and glass shard were modeled in Zbrush by Nimesh Patel and animated in Maya by Craig Travis. The smoke and dust elements were simulated in Phoenix FD for Maya by Chris Lumsdale. I composited all shot and CG elements together with additional sparks, glows, lens flares and molten glass and dirt textures in Flame.

Infinite Ladder – The girl was shot on set from a low angle stood on a short ladder against a small section of shelving. The camera slowly dropped a short distance in order to create a change in perspective of her body. The girl was then keyed and rotoscoped from this background. The new extended camera move was previsualised in Flame and then exported to Maya. Extensions to the shelving and ladder were modelled in Maya by Rob Millan along with a model of the girl which was re-projected with the re-sped shot texture after a pickup point part way into the shot allowing for the extended camera move to take over for the long drop. The drip from her pipette was created as a cloth simulation in Maya. All elements were then composited in Flame.

Anti- Gravity Peppercorns – This scene was shot on a Steadicam with peppercorns on the table to serve as both a lighting reference and as tracking markers. Additional tracking markers were added to the walls in order to ensure a solid camera track could be achieved. The hero peppercorn pincered at the end was rigged on garden wire to provide a target for both the girl and for the focus pull. All rig and tracking points were then painted out, and the new floating peppercorns were modelled and animated in Maya. The final comp was completed in Nuke by Sarah Breakwell.

Other VFX in the film included adding logos to doors, background replacements, set extensions, general cleanup to walls and floors, adding cinnamon dust, steam plumes, condensation on visor, colouring and animating drips, CG augmentation of glasses and animated graphical readouts and lasers for the microwave and robot.

It was a pleasure to once again work with Tim & Joe and the creative team from Grey London for this project.

Senseless Things - 'Stranger Things Intro'

Senseless Things were my favourite band in the 80s & 90s, so when the opportunity arose to make them an introduction piece of video to come on before they took to the stage for their one-off London reunion show, I couldn’t have been more pleased to oblige. Having recently overdosed on Netflix 80s-esque TV show ‘Stranger Things’, it seemed befitting to the level of nostalgia to remake the iconic opening title sequence for the show with a slight rewording / logo substitution.
