Sainsbury’s – ‘Over and Over’

Not the type of job I’d usually post to my website but I’m particularly proud of how we executed the moment in this when the prawns spiral in formation up towards camera and then drop in unison back down through a focus push into a moving frying pan. How would you go about shooting a thing like that? 😉

Gumtree – ‘Gameshow’

We shot this spot in 2 separate locations due to ‘logistical issues’ that prevented us from shooting in front of the house with a full crew and set.

For this reason, only the car was shot in front of the house. The host and set elements, plus an additional plate of the car were all shot in front of grey screen in a separate location. The “glamorous assistant” was also shot in front of grey screen in a stand alone plate in order to allow her to be transitioned into a cardboard cut out before she is picked up by the host.

Motion control was not within budget so we restricted the dolly track to a linear movement and took great care to match position and speed of the move between the 2 locations. These plates were then tracked and minor misalignments adjusted in post.

All elements were then comped together using a combination roto and soft light or multiply blending. We used a white floor to ensure we could lift all of the shadows of the car and actors from their plate and reapply to the driveway of the house.

The Star Prize sign was created in CG and comped above the car including reflections on the car and the windows of the house.

There wasn’t much to speak of in terms of VFX on this job until the end shot. This was shot on the last day of a 5 day shoot in torrential rain. The shot was camera tracked and then every single surface of the environment (including the interior and the reflections on the glass) was replaced with textures that I went back and shot a week later on a drier day. The foreground trees had greenery added in CG. The only thing that really remains from the shot plate is the people, who were roto’d back onto the retextured plate after having the rain drops painted off them.

More lovely work by Ian Pons Jewell. Always a pleasure to work on one of his ads at Time Based Arts

Facebook – ‘Chant’

Not the sort of thing I’d normally post however this seems worth a mention as I supervised this Berlin shoot remotely from London over Zoom at the height of the worldwide Covid lockdown.

For the final scene we shot multiple plates of people stood on the balconies of their tower block – choreographed by the camera operator via mobile phone. They changed clothes a few times between takes and we comped the plates together in order to make it look like we had a lot more people involved. I also created a couple of CG banners to add to the scene.

Unprecedented times.
